"Here, cousin, seize the crown."
-Richard II
1 crown, 2 kings, 3 shows only. Food for Groundlings brings to life Shakespeare's most emotional and dangerous History. A play so censored in his lifetime that it ran Shakespeare and his players afoul of the Crown's law- at risk of their lives. This prescient tragedy illuminates the abuse of power, the cyclical nature of fortune, the destructiveness of toxic masculinity, the adversity of Queer love, and questions the "Divine Right" of Kings.

ABOUT THE SHOW
Richard II is a Shakespearean history play that chronicles the deposition of King Richard II by Henry Bolingbroke and explores themes of power, legitimacy, and the responsibilities of kingship. The play begins with Richard's mismanagement, which escalates after he seizes the lands of the deceased John of Gaunt. This leads Bolingbroke, Gaunt's son, to return from exile with an army to reclaim his inheritance, ultimately resulting in Richard's abdication and tragic death.
